Health area - improved kitchens - latrines

With recently donated supplies to the local health center in Kuychiro, adjacent to the community of Chocco. One of our primary goals with this project is now to ensure that enough manpower is available to maintain health services for members of these communities.

Volunteers will be orientated mostly to work in the health promotion and preventive area.

For this year 2008 we are starting to work two important health aspects in the community:

1. Improved Kitchens:

Most of the women in this community cook with firewood inside their houses without any ventilation and totally exposed to the smoke.

Recent studies demonstrated that this exposition is one of the principal causes of lung cancer and blindness.

Aditionaly, they have guinea pigs running around the kitchen or the rooms, then they have problems with constant colds and in the case of children pneumonia. This is bacuse of the humidity caused by the urnie from guinea pigs.

We are already working with the teenagers to teach the community to raise the guinea pigs outside the house in special cages.

Two are the principal reasons why we want to work with the improved kitchens, one is the health aspects and the other the economical reason because they will use much less firewood to cook everyday.

2. Latrines:

The community of Chocco doesn´t have a sanitation system, they don´t have toilets or bathrooms and the peruvian government won´t do it at least the next 5 years.

Children in this community are afected with parasitoses and this is a vicious circul because they use the river or the trees to make their basic needs and they use the same river to shower or some times to cook.

Aditionaly they don´t have healthy habits like washing hands after urinating or defecating.

We want to work with the community these two projetcs but we can not do it with all of them, then we will start with one family and gradualy we will be doing this with all the families.

This project includes activities like:

-Promoting healthy habits

-Building improved kitchens

-Building latrines

-Hands whasing activities

-Looking for and Managing donations for this project.
